In September of 2004, the FAA introduced the Sport Pilot category as an easier, more affordable way to fly. With lower instruction requirements, sport pilots can earn their wings in half the time—and at half the cost—as other certification alternatives. And with less-restrictive medical-qualification rules, sport pilots can fly longer—or fly again if their medical endorsement has expired.
In addition to sport pilot certification, the FAA also introduced the category of light-sport airplanes—small, light, easy-to-fly planes that are economical, safe, and offer performance that rivals that of many common general aviation airplanes.
