SPORT PILOT CERTIFICATION
If I’m not currently a licensed pilot, how many hours of instruction do I need to fly in the Light Sport category?
To earn a sport pilot rating, which enables you to operate airplanes in the Light Sport category, you need 20 hours of instruction, including a combination of dual and solo hours.
Why does it take less time to earn a Sport Pilot rating than a private pilot certificate?
There are some aspects of the private pilot rating that are not applicable to the sport pilot. For example, sport pilots do not receive training on instrument-referenced flight, or night flying. In addition, sport pilots cannot fly in some classes of airspace without additional training. It is important to note that many people are under the mistaken impression that a Sport Pilot rating’s proficiency requirements are less than that of a private pilot. In reality, the practical test for a sport pilot rating is the same as that for the private pilot.
What are the medical requirements for a sport pilot?
Unlike private pilots, sport pilots are not required to have an FAA medical endorsement from a qualified doctor. All a sport pilot needs is a valid driver’s license, which serves as evidence of his/her physical fitness to fly.
As a sport pilot, can I take passengers?
Sport pilots can fly with one passenger on board.
How far can I fly from my home airport?
There are no restrictions on how far sport pilots can fly from their home airport.
Can I fly “for hire” as a sport pilot?

Can I fly at night?
No. Sport pilots are not permitted to fly at night.
Can I fly in instrument conditions?
No. Sport pilots are limited only to flight under visual conditions. In fact, sport pilots are restricted from flying with less than three miles of visibility.
What do I have to do to keep my sport pilot rating current?
Like private pilots, sport pilots have to pass a biennial flight review with your CFI to stay current.
Can any flight school offer a sport pilot rating?
